If you’ve been toying with the idea to start a home business, it’s time to start planning seriously. If you wait for the perfect time, or for the perfect idea, you’ll never get things done. Draft your business plan, using these tips, and have it evaluated by a consultant, who can tell you whether it’s feasible or not. You’ll probably have to make some adjustments to your initial plan, so be patient and open to new ideas, and eventually you’ll find the right solution to all the problems. Don’t rush into things, and don’t start to stock up on products before you are absolutely certain that your plan is solid.
1. Find the right products to sell. This means that you’ll have to invest a bit of time researching the local market, in order to find a niche that’s not yet fully covered. Read success stories published online or in magazines, as they may provide you with clues regarding what works best today.
2. Determine your target audience. This depends a lot on the products and services you’ll be providing, and on the area you’re going to cover. The Internet allows you to reach potential clients from all over the world, but make sure you calculate whether you can actually deliver internationally, and still keep your prices competitive. Even if you target a global market, don’t make the common mistake of trying to sell to everyone: only huge international stores can do that. You’ll need a more personal approach, if you want to convince people to buy from you, instead of going to Amazon, eBay, and so on.
3. Check several tools and vendors, before deciding what’s right for you. Don’t rush into using any payment processors, for example, before you read their terms and conditions, and you understand their fees to the tiniest detail.
4. Research the legal requirements, and make sure you comply with everything. Paperwork is boring and frustrating, but your company may get in trouble before even taking off, if you don’t pay attention to all the details.
5. Find a good name for your business. Use your imagination, but don’t go too crazy with it: find something that’s easy to pronounce and to remember, and, if possible, related to your field of activity.
6. Establish your presence online. It doesn’t matter what type of business you’re trying to set up, today everybody needs a website, even if it’s just a small one, with just a few pages of presentation. The good news is that this won’t be very expensive, and it will give you a great way to market your services and products from day one.
7. Be prepared to outsource. Running a business can become quite complex at times, and you may not have the time to deal with everything, especially when you’re starting out, and you’re just learning the ropes. Don’t turn yourself into a control freak, and be prepared to let others handle jobs for you. This means that your budget should also include such as possibility, so plan accordingly.
